The Devil tarot card meaning

The Devil upright

Two figures stand chained beneath the Devil's perch, yet the loose collars around their necks could be lifted off at any moment. This card reveals attachments or patterns that feel binding but are more within your power than they seem.

The Devil reversed

When reversed, the Devil suggests you're becoming aware of what has been holding you back and are ready to break free. Reclaiming your power often starts with naming the pattern honestly.

The Devil in love and relationships

Upright: Intense chemistry is possible, but so is an unhealthy attachment or an on-again, off-again cycle. If you keep returning to an ex, ask whether it's love or a habit you're ready to outgrow.

Reversed: You may be loosening the grip of a draining dynamic or finally seeing a situationship for what it is. This is a powerful moment to choose freedom and self-respect.

Asking about an ex or a situationship? In a three-card reading the position matters: the same card means something different as "where their heart is" than as "where this is heading".

The Devil for career and money

Upright: Notice golden handcuffs, overwork, or spending habits that leave you feeling trapped. Awareness is the first step toward regaining control over your choices and your money.

Reversed: You may be ready to leave a draining job or break an unhelpful money pattern. Each small change you make builds a stronger sense of freedom and self-trust.

Is the The Devil a yes or no card?

Read on its own, the The Devil upright leans no. Reversed, it leans no. Treat this as a lean, not a verdict: the cards around it change the answer.
